Beyond World
Records.
Advancing Human Potential.

Physiologist, elite hybrid athlete, and Countdown Scientific & Medical Advisory Board member Dr. Tyler LeBaron is taking on world- record challenges to showcase the extraordinary potential of the human body, highlight the importance of mitochondrial health, and inspire greater awareness and support for Countdown’s mission to accelerate mitochondrial science and medicine.

The Partnership

A partnership built on energy.

Behind every extraordinary feat of endurance are mitochondria. These tiny structures inside our cells transform nutrients into usable cellular energy, powering our muscles, fueling our bodies, and making human performance possible. From everyday movement to extraordinary athletic achievements, mitochondrial health plays a central role in what our bodies can do.

Dr. Tyler LeBaron is taking on world records to celebrate the extraordinary potential of the human body and raise awareness and support for Countdown’s mission to advance mitochondrial research. His efforts go beyond athletic achievement. They are about championing a field of science that is changing how we understand health, disease, aging, and human performance, while bringing hope to people living with mitochondrial dysfunction.

Following this first challenge, Tyler plans to pursue additional world records. Each one will be an opportunity to showcase human potential, bring greater awareness to the central role of mitochondria in health, and inspire support for research that will deepen our understanding of mitochondrial function, accelerate new therapies, and create new possibilities for optimizing health and extending healthy years.

It starts on Saturday, November 14, 2026 at the Snow Canyon Half Marathon in St. George, Utah, where Tyler will attempt the fastest half marathon carrying a 40 lb pack.

Most world records are about proving you're the best in the world. For me, they're about showing what's possible for the human body and the incredible role mitochondria play in making it happen. Every record is an opportunity to inspire people to see their health differently and advance research that can change lives. I'm not just racing for records. I'm racing for what comes next in mitochondrial medicine.

The First World Record

On Saturday, November 14, 2026, Dr. LeBaron will take on the fastest half marathon carrying a 40 lb pack, a mark of 1:36:56 that has stood since 2011.

To break that mark, he must average faster than a 7:24 per mile over 13.1 miles, while carrying roughly one-quarter of his body weight. To put that challenge into perspective, fewer than 10% of male half-marathon finishers achieve that time even without carrying any additional weight.

Meet Dr. Tyler LeBaron

Tyler W. LeBaron, MSc, PhD

Tyler is a physiologist, researcher, educator, and Founder and Executive Director of the Molecular Hydrogen Institute. He teaches exercise physiology and chemistry at Southern Utah University and has authored or co-authored more than 80 peer-reviewed publications on cellular physiology, redox biology, and related areas. His research into molecular hydrogen has increasingly focused on mitochondrial biology, including how this small molecule may influence electron transport and adaptive cellular stress responses.

He’s also an elite hybrid athlete whose unusual combination of scientific expertise, speed, strength, and endurance gives him a distinctive platform for public engagement. Through his role on Countdown’s Scientific and Medical Advisory Board, and these world-record challenges, he is bringing those disciplines together to  spotlight the science of cellular energy, raise awareness of the central role of mitochondria in health, and inspire support for research that can transform lives.

Why Mitochondria?

Energy is everything.

Every cell runs on it

Mitochondria provide the energy that powers nearly every cell in the body, from thought and movement to a heartbeat and a half marathon.

The common thread

Mitochondria are central to health, performance, and aging. When they falter, the effects ripple throughout the brain, heart, muscles, and beyond.

Overlooked and underfunded

Despite their foundational role in human health, mitochondrial research remains overlooked and underfunded. Historically, it has received less than 1% of the billions nonprofit foundations invest in U.S. medical research each year. Countdown exists to change that.

What's Ahead

One record at a time

The first record Tyler is chasing is the fastest weighted half marathon at 40 lbs. But it doesn’t end there. Over the course of the coming year, he’ll be going after other records, from different distances to different weights, including the fastest mile with kettlebells. Each new challenge will offer another chance to introduce more people to Countdown’s mission.
